Upper Yosemite Falls: A Steep Climb Worth Preparing For

A demanding climb to the top, enormous valley views, and a descent that deserves its own energy budget.

The scale of the valley opens up as you climb.

We reached the top in June 2023 and recorded about 8.4 miles for our outing. It was a hard climb. The steepness is what I remember most, along with a small overlook at the top reached beside a railing. Take breaks and give yourself time to absorb the views instead of trying to rush the ascent.

Standard route: NPS lists 7.2 miles round trip and 2,700 feet of gain to the top of Yosemite Falls, with 6–8 hours suggested. Our recorded mileage was longer; it should not replace the park’s route description. The trail begins near Camp 4 and has exposed, rocky sections and steep drops. Stay on the maintained trail and follow barriers at the overlook.

Save something for the descent—and consider hiking poles

It is easy to focus on reaching the top, but you still have to get back down. Give the descent its own time and energy budget. This is a steep hike, and tired legs and loose footing can make the downhill demanding too. Take your time, watch your footing, and save enough energy to enjoy the way back.

I would also consider bringing trekking poles, especially if long descents tend to bother your knees. They can help with balance and take some strain off your knees on the way down. Try them on a shorter hike first so using them feels natural. Take your time and keep those breaks in the plan.

Start early for a long hiking day, carry sufficient food and water, and leave energy for the descent. The NPS Yosemite Falls Trail guide covers the route, heat, water and seasonal conditions.
