Yellowstone National Park: Geysers, Wildlife + the Grand Canyon
Yellowstone is less about chasing hiking mileage and more about thermal features, wildlife, waterfalls and understanding how enormous the park really is.
Our take: Give Yellowstone several days and, if your budget allows, stay inside the park. The distances are enormous. We changed lodging areas so we could spend time near Mammoth and later closer to Old Faithful without repeatedly crossing the entire park.
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone: a must
This was one of our strongest Yellowstone recommendations. The canyon colors are extraordinary, the Upper and Lower Falls add huge drama, and you can get spectacular views without committing to a difficult hike. Artist Point is an easy place to start; adding trail toward Point Sublime gives you more canyon views.

Lamar + Hayden: make time for wildlife
We deliberately spent time in both Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley. Bison were a major part of the experience, and simply watching the landscape for wildlife felt completely different from our hiking-heavy Teton days. Go slowly, use pullouts and give animals plenty of space.
Old Faithful + the Upper Geyser Basin by bike
Old Faithful is famous for a reason, and the predicted eruption schedule makes it fun to plan around. But we especially liked renting bikes and riding from the Old Faithful area toward Morning Glory Pool. It broke up the standard drive-park-boardwalk rhythm and let us cover the geyser basin in a more active way. Bikes stay off thermal boardwalks and backcountry trails, so park them where required and explore features on foot.
Grand Prismatic: see it from above too
The colors are spectacular. Walk the Midway Geyser Basin boardwalk for the close-up experience, but also hike to the Grand Prismatic overlook from the Fairy Falls side. The elevated perspective is where the scale and colors really come together.

Mystic Falls: our real trail day near Old Faithful
Mystic Falls is a useful counterpoint to the geyser boardwalks: river, forest, waterfall and a steeper overlook loop in one compact hike. We would add it when you want to move rather than spend the entire day driving and walking boardwalks.

Mammoth + the north
Mammoth Hot Springs was worth seeing and unlike the other thermal areas. If you have a compressed itinerary, we understand not driving all the way north solely for it. We would prioritize the terraces themselves over the Beaver Ponds Loop, which we would skip when time is tight.
Yellowstone Lake + fishing
We booked a guided fishing trip from the Yellowstone Lake area and specifically wanted to cook our catch for dinner. The guide used sonar, handled the fish and filleted what regulations allowed us to keep. It was a memorable family experience. Check current rules before fishing: native fish such as Yellowstone cutthroat must be released, while invasive lake trout caught in Yellowstone Lake must be killed.
Family break: whitewater rafting
We also did a rafting trip on the Yellowstone River outside the park. It was fun and, especially with kids, a good way to break up consecutive days of hiking, driving and boardwalks. We would treat it as an itinerary enhancer rather than a Yellowstone must-do.
