Beyond the OverlookGrand Prismatic Overlook
Walk beside Grand Prismatic at Midway Geyser Basin, but hike above it too. The elevated view is the one that makes the colors make sense.

Our take: Do both perspectives. The boardwalk is about being close to the thermal feature; the overlook is about actually seeing its shape and color.
Short hike, enormous payoff
The overlook trail starts from the Fairy Falls trailhead and is roughly 1.2 miles round trip, with a gradual climb followed by a short steeper push to the viewpoint. It is easy enough to fit into a geyser-basin day and gives one of Yellowstone's most recognizable views.
Timing matters more than mileage
This is a very popular trail and parking is limited. Going early can help with crowds, but cold air can also leave more steam hanging over the spring. If photography is your priority, a clearer, warmer part of the day can reveal more color—so there is a real tradeoff between visibility and crowds.
Pair it with Midway Geyser Basin
We would not choose between the boardwalk and overlook. Stand beside Grand Prismatic first or afterward, then see it from above. The two experiences are completely different and together explain why this thermal feature is so spectacular.
Worth it?
Yes—even if Yellowstone is not your hiking park. This is exactly the kind of short walk that earns a place in a Yellowstone itinerary because the viewpoint adds something you cannot get from the road or boardwalk.
