Our take: Do the loop if conditions and your group allow. The waterfall is good, but the elevated section adds broader views and makes the route feel much more varied.
More than a waterfall walk
The familiar loop is around 3.5 miles with roughly 600 feet of climbing. It begins gently along the Little Firehole River before reaching Mystic Falls, then the loop option climbs more steeply to open views above the basin. Hikers repeatedly call out the contrast between quiet river, waterfall and higher rocky viewpoints.
The climb changes the difficulty
If you simply want the falls, you can keep the day easier. The upper loop includes a sharper climb, narrow sections and some drop-offs, so it feels meaningfully more adventurous than the mileage suggests. At elevation, even a short steep section can hit harder than expected.
Bring bug spray
Mosquitoes are one of the most consistent practical complaints in warmer months, especially around the river and forest. This is a small detail until you forget repellent.
Current access: Biscuit Basin remains closed after the 2024 hydrothermal explosion. As of 2026, Yellowstone directs hikers to use alternate access from the Daisy area for Mystic Falls. Check current park conditions before going because thermal and wildlife closures can change.
Worth it?
Yes if you want an actual hike around the Old Faithful area. It is not more important than Grand Prismatic or the major geyser basins, but it is a very good way to add trail time to a thermal-feature-heavy day.
