Can you do the Mighty 5 in a week? Yes. Seven days worked for us. It is active and you will move, but the parks are different enough that the road trip never felt repetitive.
Days 1–2: Zion
Give Zion the most time. We stayed at Zion Lodge, which was incredibly convenient for walking to trails and reducing some shuttle logistics, although staying inside the park is not necessary. Build the two days around the Narrows, Watchman, Canyon Overlook and the West Rim approach toward Scout Lookout; add Emerald Pools based on time and energy.
On the way toward Kanab/Bryce, Coral Pink Sand Dunes is an inexpensive DIY change of pace. Renting or bringing a sled/board is much cheaper than a guided adventure and our kids had a blast.
Day 3: Bryce Canyon
Bryce is our favorite park if you only have one day. We stayed at the lodge and highly recommend it when available because being right there makes sunrise easy. Drive the overlooks, but absolutely hike below the rim - Queen’s Garden + Navajo, with Peekaboo if you want more. Then stay for sunset and stars; the ranger-led night-sky program was one of our memorable surprises.
Day 4: Capitol Reef
Use the drive east for Capitol Reef: Scenic Drive, Grand Wash, Fruita, the orchard/pie stop and petroglyphs. This was the park that most exceeded our expectations. It felt less crowded and more relaxed without feeling like a consolation prize between Bryce and Moab.
Days 5–6: Moab - Arches first, Canyonlands second
We used an Airbnb in Moab, which made a good base for both parks and the non-hiking activities. Give Arches the stronger hiking day. Devils Garden is our pick for the best hike in the park; Delicate Arch is the iconic photo stop. Add Windows, Park Avenue and the scenic drive as time allows.
Use Island in the Sky at Canyonlands for a shorter park day: Mesa Arch, Grand View Point and Upheaval Dome give you a good sample without trying to conquer a park that is genuinely huge.
Day 7: adventure break or flex day
Do not make every day another long hike. Our kids loved both the Hell’s Revenge Jeep outing and the ATV + Peek-a-Boo slot-canyon tour. See all of our Utah adventure breaks. If you are behind on a park, this is also the day to use as a buffer.
If you need to shorten the trip
Keep Zion, Bryce and Arches. Bryce is the easiest spectacular one-day park, with Arches a close second. Zion deserves more time. Capitol Reef is the surprise we would try hard to keep; Canyonlands would be our first cut on a compressed first trip.
