Canyonlands: Island in the Sky in One Day
Canyonlands is enormous. We explored Island in the Sky—and if our Utah trip had to lose one park, this is the one we would cut first.

Important caveat: our verdict is about the Island in the Sky experience we actually did. Canyonlands has four districts, and the Needles is a very different destination for longer hiking and backpacking.
Grand View Point + rim hike
The scale is the attraction. We walked along the rim looking into enormous layered canyons and could see a tiny road far below. It made the landscape feel almost impossibly large.
Upheaval Dome
This was one of the most interesting stops because it looked so different from everything around it. The unusual circular structure is supported by geological evidence as an ancient impact crater.
Mesa Arch
A nice short arch hike with a dramatic view through the opening. We liked it, but if arches are the goal, we would choose Arches National Park over Canyonlands.
Would we skip Canyonlands?
If you have time for all five, go. If your itinerary is squeezed, Island in the Sky is the first park we would remove—not because it is bad, but because Zion, Bryce, Arches and Capitol Reef gave us more distinctive experiences.
