Kauaʻi was one of those places where the hiking kept winning our attention. Nāpali was the flagship, but the red canyon, wild coast and lush interior made the island much more varied than we expected.

Our take: Kauaʻi is not just a beach trip with a few hikes. For us, it was an adventure destination with extraordinary beaches around the edges.
Stay on two sides of the island
We spent the first part of the trip in Princeville, which made the North Shore and our very early Kalalau start much easier. Then we moved to the south side, around Poʻipū, for Waimea Canyon, Mahaʻulepu and beach time. For an active itinerary, we would split the stay again rather than spend the whole trip driving back and forth.
The experiences we would build the trip around
Make Nāpali the priority, but choose a hike that fits your group. Hanakāpīʻai Falls is a substantial waterfall outing; our much longer Kalalau day was a separate level of commitment. Then add Waimea Canyon and an easier south-shore day for variety.

See Kauaʻi from the air
Our helicopter tour was genuinely worthwhile. After hiking the island, flying over steep valleys, waterfalls and the incredibly lush interior showed us parts of Kauaʻi that simply are not accessible by road or trail. It also gave us a completely different sense of the scale of Nāpali.
Poʻipū, turtles and chickens everywhere
We also spent time around Poʻipū and saw green sea turtles on the beach. Give resting turtles plenty of space; current NOAA guidance recommends at least 10 feet in Hawaiʻi. And one tiny Kauaʻi detail we still remember: roosters and chickens seemed to be everywhere.

What makes Kauaʻi work for an active family
The island gave us hard hikes, an easier coastal walk, beaches, wildlife and a completely different aerial perspective without needing to turn every day into another strenuous outing.
