South Rim Trail

Our major Big Bend hiking day: a long climb through the high Chisos to one of the park's biggest views.

South Rim was our big hiking day in Big Bend and one of the park experiences we would prioritize for strong hikers. We do not have photos from this hike, but the combination of mountain terrain, birdlife and the enormous view from the rim made it memorable enough that it deserves its own guide.

How the South Rim loop works

The classic South Rim day uses the Pinnacles and Laguna Meadow trails to create a loop through the high Chisos. NPS describes Pinnacles as the steeper option and Laguna Meadow as the more gradual route. Either way, you are earning the view with roughly 2,000 feet of climbing.

We liked the variety. The higher Chisos felt surprisingly different from the desert below, and this is where we remember seeing some incredible birds. The birdlife was memorable enough to stand out even without photos from the hike. Then the South Rim opened to a huge view over Big Bend country and toward northern Mexico.

How hard did South Rim feel?

This is a substantial hike, but for us the difficulty came from the total day rather than one technical obstacle. It is long, there is sustained climbing, and Big Bend heat can add considerably to the effort. Start early and carry all the water you expect to need rather than planning around natural sources.

If you want a shorter Chisos hike, Lost Mine is the easier recommendation. South Rim is what we would choose when hiking is the main event of the day.

One seasonal issue to check

Parts of the East and Northeast Rim can close during peregrine falcon nesting season. The exact route options can therefore change seasonally, so check current NPS trail closures before deciding which rim variation to hike.

Would we hike South Rim again?

Yes. Big Bend has several excellent short hikes, but South Rim is the hike that makes the Chisos feel like a true mountain destination. If you are comfortable with a 12-plus-mile day and the weather is appropriate, we think it earns the effort.
