Beyond the OverlookLost Mine was one of our favorite shorter hikes in Big Bend because the payoff starts well before the end. It has real climbing, but we never felt like we were spending hours working toward a single viewpoint. The trail keeps opening to bigger Chisos views as you climb.

Why Lost Mine is worth it
The trail starts high in the Chisos and climbs through juniper, oak and pine. About a mile in, a saddle already gives you a strong view toward Casa Grande and Juniper Canyon. That early payoff is part of why we liked it so much.
From the saddle, the trail climbs more steeply before leveling onto the ridge. The final area opens to broad views toward Pine Canyon and the Sierra del Carmen in Mexico. We remember the views as unreal for most of the hike, not just at the turnaround.
How hard is Lost Mine Trail?
We would call it a solid moderate hike. The 1,100 feet of gain is noticeable and there are sustained uphill sections, but the total distance is manageable. For us it moved surprisingly quickly. Strong hikers may find it relatively short; visitors not used to elevation gain or desert heat will feel the climbing more.
The bigger planning issue can be the trailhead. Parking is limited, so an early start helps both with parking and with avoiding the hottest part of the day.
Lost Mine or South Rim?
They serve different purposes. South Rim is the major hiking day, with 12 to 14.5 miles and about 2,000 feet of gain. Lost Mine is the better choice when you want a half-day mountain hike with an excellent effort-to-view ratio.
If you are a strong hiker with enough time, we would do both. If you only have a few hours in the Chisos, Lost Mine gives you a lot of what makes the mountains special without taking the entire day.
What to know before hiking
This is black bear and mountain lion country, and NPS recommends keeping children close. Bring plenty of water and sun protection even though the higher Chisos can feel cooler than the desert floor. Check current trail and Basin conditions before you go.
