West Maui · Short Hike
Nakalele Blowhole + the Acid War Zone
The blowhole is cool. The landscape around it may be even cooler—wind-carved lava, crashing ocean and terrain that felt almost otherworldly.

Verdict: WORTH IT. Short, unusual and completely different from Maui's lush hikes.
What is the “Acid War Zone”?
It is a nickname for the stark, heavily weathered lava landscape around this section of coast—not an area covered in acid. Salt spray, wind and erosion create the strange formations that made this stop so memorable for us.
Do not crowd the blowhole
Enjoy the blowhole from a safe distance. Wet lava shelves, large waves and the blowhole opening itself can be dangerous. The experience is better when you appreciate the whole coastline instead of trying to stand as close as possible.
