Waiheʻe Ridge Trail: One of Our Favorite Maui Hikes

This was gorgeous—green ridges, deep valleys and clouds moving through the mountains. It felt like the Maui we wanted to hike.

Waiheʻe Ridge Trail: One of Our Favorite Maui Hikes
Verdict: DO IT. Waiheʻe Ridge was one of the best hikes of our Maui trip.
Distance: 5 miles round trip · Gain: about 1,560 ft · Difficulty: moderate, with a sustained climb.

Why we liked it

The trail climbs from roughly 1,000 feet through pasture and wet forest toward a summit around 2,563 feet. The reward is a succession of views into Waiheʻe Gorge and Makamakaʻole Gulch, plus broad views over central Maui when the clouds cooperate.

We had plenty of cloud and mist, but that did not ruin the hike. It made the steep green walls feel even more dramatic. Conditions can change quickly here, so expect the trail to feel very different depending on the weather.
