What surprised us most about Carlsbad was the scale. We knew we were visiting a cavern. We did not understand how enormous it would feel until we were actually walking down into it.
Evening 1: Bat Flight Program around dusk
Morning 2: Walk down the Natural Entrance Trail, explore the Big Room, take the elevator back up
Our visit: May 2025
Our favorite Carlsbad Caverns experiences
Walk into the cavern through the Natural Entrance
The Natural Entrance Trail drops about 750 feet over 1.25 miles. Walking down instead of taking the elevator made the transition into the cavern part of the experience. It kept getting darker as we descended, and then the scale opened up below.

Come back for the bat flight
We arrived around dusk expecting a ranger talk before the bats emerged. The bats had their own schedule and started coming out early. Thousands streamed out of the cave. It was one of the coolest and most unexpected wildlife experiences of the trip.
How big is Carlsbad Cavern?
The Big Room is the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America. The walking loop is 1.25 miles, and park materials describe the room as roughly six football fields in area, with the ceiling reaching about 230 feet in places. Those numbers sound impressive, but the scale made much more sense once we were standing inside it.

What the cavern actually felt like
The lighting felt deliberately curated. Instead of flooding the cavern with light, individual formations and sections were illuminated while the surrounding space stayed dark. It made the cavern feel dramatic without losing the sense that we were deep underground.
We would absolutely choose the Natural Entrance over simply taking the elevator down if you are physically comfortable with the descent. Then use the elevator for the return. That combination gave us the best sense of how deep and large the cavern really is.
Planning now
Current park rules require a timed-entry reservation for cavern access. The reservation selects your entry time; entrance tickets are handled separately at the visitor center. The evening Bat Flight Program is free and does not require a reservation. Program timing changes with sunset, and electronics are not allowed at the bat flight.
