Carlsbad Caverns Bat Flight: Is It Worth It?

Yes. Thousands of bats started streaming out before the ranger had even finished the planned introduction, and it became one of the coolest experiences of our trip.

Yes. We would absolutely plan an evening around the Carlsbad Caverns bat flight. We arrived around dusk during our May 2025 visit expecting the ranger to explain the bats before they emerged. Instead, the bats started coming out a little early.

There was something especially fun about that. The ranger program had a plan; the bats did not care. Thousands began streaming out of the Natural Entrance while we watched from the amphitheater.

Bat Flight quick facts

Where: Bat Flight Amphitheater at the Natural Entrance

Cost: Free

Reservation: None for the bat program

Timing: Around dusk, with program times changing through the season

Important: Phones, cameras and other electronic devices are prohibited during the program

What we actually saw

It felt like thousands and thousands of bats, and that is entirely plausible. The park says several hundred thousand Brazilian free-tailed bats can leave the cavern on summer evenings. The outflight can continue for hours depending on the colony and conditions.

They spiral out of the cave and head into the night to feed. Sitting above the same Natural Entrance that we would walk through the next morning made the experience even better.

The bats may not wait for the ranger

The ranger talk is scheduled before the flight, but emergence is a natural event rather than a performance with an exact start time. The park has found a relationship with civil twilight, but the actual emergence varies. On our night, they came early enough that the bats became the program before the planned explanation was finished.

May worked very well for us

We visited in May 2025. Bat Flight Program start times shift with sunset, so we would not build a future trip around the exact clock time from our visit. Check the current day's program time and arrive early enough to settle into the amphitheater.

Is the Carlsbad Caverns bat flight worth it?

For us, absolutely. The bat flight turned an evening at Carlsbad Caverns into a completely different experience from walking the cave. If your visit falls during bat-flight season, we would plan to be at the amphitheater before the posted program time rather than treating it as an optional extra.

The key is not to expect an exact show time. The bats emerge on their own schedule, the ranger program shifts with sunset, and weather can affect the evening. Check the current NPS schedule before your visit.
