It is quick, steep and exposed - and the views are enormous. One of the highest-payoff short hikes in Sequoia.

Our verdict: MUST DO. The hike is tiny on paper, but it does not feel ordinary.

The stairs are the hike
Moro Rock climbs directly up a granite dome. It is not technical, but the staircase is steep and the exposure is very noticeable. Handrails make the route feel controlled, but this is not the place to rush.
The payoff comes almost immediately
You do not need hours to get a huge Sierra view. As soon as you rise above the trees, the Great Western Divide opens up. That effort-to-view ratio is why we liked it so much.
Parking note: The lot is small, and summer access can involve the park shuttle on weekends and holidays. Check current park transportation before you go.
Is Moro Rock scary?
We did not find it especially scary. It is undeniably steep and the drop-offs are obvious, but the built stone steps, railings and other safety features make the route feel much more controlled than the exposure sounds on paper.
We went very late
Going late worked well for us. It was not very crowded, which made the narrow staircase much more pleasant and gave us time to stop for the views without constantly managing people coming in both directions.
Who might still dislike it?
If exposed stairs or heights make you very uncomfortable, you may still find Moro Rock intimidating. For us, though, the safety features kept it from feeling reckless. The bigger challenge was simply how steep the stairs are.
Why we would still call it a must-do
The effort-to-view ratio is exceptional. You get a huge Sierra panorama from a hike that takes very little time, which makes it easy to fit into a day with Giant Forest or other Sequoia stops.
