Golden Circle vs. Snæfellsnes

Both are easy Reykjavík-area road trips. If we only had one free sightseeing day, we would choose Snæfellsnes.

Gullfoss on Iceland’s Golden Circle
Golden Circle: iconic, easy to organize and very busy.
Kirkjufell on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Snæfellsnes: farther, wilder and more adventurous-feeling.

Why we would choose Snæfellsnes

The Golden Circle is popular for a reason: Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss are impressive and easy to combine. But after seeing more of Iceland, that day felt more like moving among major tourist attractions than exploring.

Snæfellsnes gave us more of the Iceland we loved: quieter roads, coastline, animals, lava, short hikes and the freedom to stop when something looked interesting.

When we would still choose the Golden Circle

If this is your first trip, time is very limited and you want the iconic checklist efficiently, the Golden Circle makes sense. Go early because the major stops get crowded.

Our hot take: With one extra sightseeing day, we would pick Snæfellsnes over the Golden Circle.
