Taggart Lake Loop

Taggart Lake is the hike we would choose when we want classic Teton scenery without committing most of the day.

Teton reflections at Taggart Lake

Our take: Big payoff, relatively little effort. We loved spending time along the rocks by the water and watching the Tetons reflect across the lake.

A classic view without a huge climb

The standard Taggart Lake Loop is about 3.8 miles and is generally an easy-to-moderate outing. The trail mixes open mountain views, forest and lakeshore. It is popular for good reason: you get the kind of mountain-and-water composition people come to Grand Teton to see without needing an all-day hike.

Do not rush the lake

The shoreline was the highlight for us. We hopped around the rocks, watched the reflections and spent time by the water instead of tagging the lake and immediately turning back. Calm conditions can make the reflections exceptional.

Start early

The trailhead is convenient, which also means the parking area fills. Hikers frequently note that mornings are calmer and parking becomes more difficult later. Seasonal snow and mud can linger well beyond when the valley feels like spring.

2026 planning note: Grand Teton is reconstructing part of the Taggart trail system and the north side of the Taggart Trail is currently closed to public use. Follow posted detours and check current park conditions before relying on a saved route.

Worth it?

Absolutely. Cascade Canyon is the bigger adventure; Taggart Lake is the easier recommendation. It is especially good when you want a beautiful hike before or after a driving day.
