Beyond the OverlookCascade Canyon via Jenny Lake
The boat is fun. Inspiration Point is beautiful. But for us, the day became special when we kept hiking into Cascade Canyon.

Our take: If you have the legs for a longer day, do not make Inspiration Point the automatic turnaround. Continuing into Cascade Canyon gives you the immersive Teton hiking experience we came for.
Use the boat to spend your energy in the canyon
We took the Jenny Lake shuttle across the water, which was an enjoyable start and cut out several miles of lakeshore walking. From the west dock, Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point are the obvious first stops. The climb to Inspiration Point is rocky and can feel busy, but the view back over Jenny Lake is worth it.
Then keep going
Once you enter Cascade Canyon, the experience changes. The crowds thin, the trail settles into the canyon, and the mountains rise on both sides. Hikers consistently describe this as the section where the scenery becomes relentless rather than a single viewpoint. We agree. Our day was roughly in the 9–11 mile range because we continued well beyond Inspiration Point before turning around.
Useful benchmark: With the boat shuttle, the official route to the Forks of Cascade Canyon is about 9.2 miles round trip with roughly 1,480 feet of climbing. You do not have to reach the Forks—the trail works very well as a turn-around-when-you-have-had-enough hike.
What surprised us
The trail has variety without feeling technical: waterfall, lake overlook, forest, creek and then a huge glacial canyon. Expect rocky footing and some steeper stretches near Inspiration Point. Wildlife sightings are common enough that this is not the place to get casual about bear awareness.
Go early
Jenny Lake is one of the busiest parts of Grand Teton. Parking and boat lines build quickly, and hikers repeatedly report a much calmer experience early in the morning. An early start also leaves room to linger in the canyon instead of hiking to a clock.
Worth it?
One of our top Grand Teton days. If you want a short outing, Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point work. If you want the hike that shows why the Tetons deserve their own days instead of being a Yellowstone add-on, continue into Cascade Canyon.
