Sassolungo Loop Hike: Is 10 Miles Worth It?
A hard full-day loop that kept delivering: wild rock formations, animals, rifugios and huge Dolomites views.

Our route: clockwise from Passo Sella
We hiked the Sassolungo Group Loop clockwise. Our day came to about 10.4 miles with roughly 3,400 feet of climbing. There is a lot of uphill, but taking it slowly made the climbing manageable for us.
The scenery keeps changing
This was not a hike with one big payoff at the end. We saw unusual rock formations, broad green valleys, animals and cows directly on the trail, and crossed a section of lingering snow or ice. The variety is a huge part of why we loved it.

Crowded first half, quieter second half
The beginning was very busy. But as the mileage and difficulty increased, the number of people dropped significantly. By the second half it felt much less crowded.

Make time for the rifugio
There was an excellent rifugio along the route. On a long hike like this, being able to sit down for food or a drink is part of the experience, not just a convenience.
Our verdict
If you are a strong hiker, put Sassolungo high on your list. It was one of our favorite hiking days in the Dolomites. The distance and elevation are real, but so is the payoff.
