We visited Santa Cruz Island as a full-day trip from Oxnard. Channel Islands worked well as a Southern California add-on because the ferry, sea-cave kayaking, hiking and island wildlife made one day feel genuinely different from the mainland.
Is Channel Islands National Park worth a day trip?
Yes. You do not have to camp to make the park worthwhile. We stayed in Oxnard and used one full day for Santa Cruz Island. The guided sea-cave kayak tour was the highlight, and hiking above the coast gave us a completely different view of the same landscape.

Who we would recommend it to
Choose Channel Islands when you want an active day that feels separate from the mainland: sea cliffs, open water and time outside. We would give it a full day rather than squeeze it between other stops. If you want a flexible sightseeing day with restaurants and easy stops, this requires more planning than that.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip was enough for us. Camping could be a fun upgrade if you want more solitude or hiking time, but we would not consider an overnight necessary for a first visit.
What to know before you go
Ferry timing controls the day, services on Santa Cruz Island are very limited, and cell service can be unreliable. Bring the food, water, sun protection and layers you need, and verify current ferry and National Park Service information before your trip.
