Sunshine Meadows in Summer: Is It Worth the Gondola Price?

Beautiful alpine access without the big climb, but the ticket price matters.

The short answer: It was worth it for two of us, especially on a smoky day. For a larger group, I would look carefully at the total lift cost.

Why we went

Wildfire smoke had changed some of our bigger hiking plans around Banff. Spending hours climbing for a mountain view hidden by smoke did not make much sense.

Sunshine Meadows was a good alternative because the wildflowers were spectacular, and smoke does not take away the flowers right in front of you.

The gondola and chairlift are part of the experience

You ride the gondola up to Sunshine Village and can continue higher on the Standish Chairlift. After days of hiking uphill for every view, being carried into the alpine was actually fun.

The hiking

We did a pretty loop of about five miles, although the trail network makes it easy to go longer or shorter. The hiking was fairly manicured and easy to follow, and there were plenty of other people around.

Sunshine Village also has food and facilities, so this can be a fun lower-stress mountain day.

The biggest question is price

In 2026, summer sightseeing tickets were around CA$80 per adult, with lower youth and child rates and family pricing also available. Check current rates when you book because pricing can change.

For two of us, we were comfortable paying for the experience, especially because smoke had made some of our other plans less appealing. If I were paying for a larger group, I would think about the value more carefully.

When I think it is worth it

Peak wildflower season, a smoky day, a recovery day, or a group with different hiking abilities are all situations where Sunshine makes a lot of sense.

On a crystal-clear day with strong hikers and limited time, I would prioritize hikes like Parker Ridge or Sentinel Pass first.

Our Verdict
