Maunakea Sunset + Stars: Absolutely Worth It
You do not have to drive to the summit to have an extraordinary night.
We drove ourselves to the Visitor Information Station at roughly 9,200 feet. The night we went, the drive was completely manageable even coming down after dark, although mountain weather can make conditions very different on another day.
Bring the warmest layers you have
It was extremely windy and cold. Pack layers, long pants and a hat even if the coast is hot. There is a small store at the visitor station if you desperately underestimated the temperature.
Sunset was only half the experience
We had serious fog, then it lifted right around sunset and the view became magnificent. Stay afterward. Once the sky became properly dark, the stars were incredible and staff led a laser-guided night-sky presentation during our visit.
What about the summit?
You can continue higher only when conditions and vehicle rules permit; current summit-road rules require an appropriate 4WD/AWD vehicle and staff check vehicles. We did not feel we needed the summit, but it is an interesting option. Public telescope access is not an every-night experience, so check the current Maunakea visitor program schedule if that matters to you.
