Manta Ray Night Snorkeling: Is It Worth It?

A lot of setup and waiting, followed by an experience that is genuinely hard to replicate anywhere else.

There are many Kona operators. We would choose based on a convenient launch point, timing and group setup rather than obsessing over one perfect company.

What you actually do

From the boat, our swim to the floating light board was extremely short—roughly 15 seconds. Then we held onto the board while the lights attracted plankton and manta rays glided directly underneath us.

Was it difficult?

In our conditions, no. The guide built up the swimming portion more than we felt was necessary for comfortable swimmers, but ocean conditions and operator requirements vary, so follow your guide's safety rules.

Some of our kids did not love keeping their faces underwater continuously. That was fine: they could lift their heads while still holding the board, then look back down when they wanted.

The downside: waiting

The total outing took longer than we expected because there was substantial check-in, instruction, gearing up and waiting. Once the mantas arrived underneath us, though, the experience was incredibly cool.

Our verdict: Absolutely worth it. Unique, not particularly strenuous for us, and one of the signature experiences of the island.
