Papakōlea Green Sand Beach: Worth the Hike?

The sand is olive green, the coastal walk is beautiful, and the hike is part of what made the stop worthwhile.

Papakolea Green Sand Beach

The sand is genuinely green, but think olive, not neon emerald. The color comes from olivine crystals in the volcanic material surrounding the beach.

Do not stress about one perfect track

Vehicle use has created many paths across the exposed landscape. We preferred walking closer to the water when appropriate because the ocean views were excellent. The hike was not especially difficult for us, but it is exposed, so water and sun protection matter.

Spend time at the beach

We sat on the large rocks, watched the waves and enjoyed how different this beach felt from anywhere else on the trip. That was more rewarding than simply arriving, photographing green sand and immediately leaving.

About the paid rides

You may see people offering vehicle rides. We would hike instead. State agencies have taken enforcement action against unauthorized shuttle operations because of damage to cultural and natural resources.

Our verdict: Worth it. If you have the time and ability, walk—the coastal hike is part of the experience.
