Firsthand hike guide

Sol Duc Falls Hike: Our Rainforest + Waterfall Pick

An easy, beautifully maintained rainforest walk to a genuinely worthwhile waterfall. We would keep this in an Olympic itinerary.

Firsthand guide · Updated September 2026 · How we review our guides

Our verdict: Worth it. We hiked the entire trail and liked the rainforest walk as much as the waterfall. It did not feel overly crowded on our visit.

Sol Duc Falls trail at a glance

Distance: 1.8 miles round trip · Elevation: about 262 feet · Difficulty: easy · Typical time: about 45–60 minutes, plus time at the falls.

Those trail figures are from AllTrails; conditions and seasonal road access can change, so check current conditions before leaving.

What the hike is actually like

The trail itself was part of the appeal for us. It felt like a well-curated hiking path through classic Olympic rainforest: dense green forest, moss, ferns and water everywhere. This was not a hike where we rushed through the approach just to reach the attraction at the end.

The waterfall is the payoff, but the short distance makes this an unusually efficient stop. You get a convincing rainforest experience and a waterfall without committing half a day.

Was it crowded?

Sol Duc is popular, but it did not feel super crowded when we hiked it. Your experience can obviously change by season and time of day.

Sol Duc vs. Hoh

If our Olympic itinerary were crowded, we would choose Sol Duc and Quinault before adding Hoh simply because Hoh is the famous name. We enjoyed the rainforest experience here and at Quinault, and Sol Duc adds the waterfall.

Who should do it?

This is one of the easiest recommendations in Olympic for families, mixed-ability groups or hikers who want something worthwhile between longer hikes. Strong hikers should not dismiss it just because it is short.

What we would do

Give yourself enough time to enjoy the forest rather than treating the falls as a quick photo stop. We would absolutely do it again.
